Yesterday we stayed another day in Zwaartsluis. Clive had a few chores to do like cleaning out the shower sump (charming) while I took up the shower curtain which was at least a foot too long. In the afternoon he and Tony took our bikes to tour the lime kilns in the area. Very interesting, he reported. I stayed home and fiddled with the email and, eventually, the blog. Later we went over to Dreamflower for a lovely babootie dinner.
The mussels were 5 euro for 2kg. Tony & Elaine helped eat them. |
Today has been a mix of sunshine and showers. We left the cosy haven of Swaartsluis after a quick visit to the bakery and a bit of boat scrubbing -I did the shopping, the skipper did the scrubbing :-). Mind you, he did have assistance ...
We really liked the town -more like a village, really, although I WILL NOT MISS THE BELLS! The church has one bell which they are obviously very proud of because they ring it A LOT. And not only on the half-hour & the hour (which they do 24\7!), but at numerous odd times during the day it will suddenly ring, bong bong bong, for 10 minutes or so at a time. And being as it's a lonely bell with no friends, it's not even tuneful. So I am happy to have wished it adeieu.

Lift bridge into the Beulake lakes. |
The Aremberger canal is very rural with reed beds on either side. A lot of the roofs in the area are thatched with reeds. |
We made our way round the corner to the Aremberger canal, with the intention of trying a rural mooring in the lakes somewhere. But the weather was quite nasty - windy & rainy - and we decided to carry on to Blokzijl where we are tied up in their large binnehaven. They have space for about 50 boats, but there are only a dozen or so in at the moment. Quite expensive, in my opinion, at 15 euro a night with only coin operated electricity so we will probably go 5km back down to the lake and take a left up to Giethoorn tomorrow. EVERYONE has told us we must not miss Giethoorn, so let's hope it lives up to the billing.
By the way, our cruising speed averages out at about 10km per hour. So today we did 30 k in 3 hours.
